Artist Profile – Tatum Bratcher

Art is a fascinating concept. It can be challenging to define, and the advantages of creating and owning art are frequently overlooked. There are times when I have the “ideal” idea, dedicate months to it, and it may turn out just as I envisioned. Recently, however, I’ve been exploring the creation of pieces based on my immediate feelings. If something doesn’t quite work, I simply dismantle it. I often joke that if I weren’t an artist, I would have pursued a career in science, driven by the thrill of discovering new artistic processes.

Many of my artworks draw inspiration from children’s literature. My goal is to evoke the feelings of comfort and whimsy that come with childhood. A significant number of artists find it challenging to fit into adult life, a struggle that can persist throughout their lives. I’ve discovered that I can “get away with” childish ideas as long as I present them in a visually appealing way. In the world of picture books, anything is possible – as long as we avoid waking the troll under the bridge. It is the same in visual arts.

Fortunately, the Warren County Public Library provided me with a space to merge all my passions. I now read stories to our youngest library patrons and share creative energy with them. Every day I have the opportunity to serve our community, which is a gift I truly cherish.

I still have a passion for cutting things up. Every day I discover a new project that gives me the chance to cut and paste. It might be an addiction, but that’s yet to be confirmed. What I do know is that manipulating art supplies brings me immense joy.

The impact of art on the brain extends far beyond mere enjoyment; it significantly influences our emotions, cognitive abilities, and mental well-being. Engaging in the creation or appreciation of art allows us to delve into our thoughts, articulate our feelings, and build meaningful connections with the surrounding world.

I will continue to embrace my curiosity and create new works. This year, I’ve placed my art exhibitions on hold, but my mind is buzzing with ideas. While the creative process can sometimes feel isolating, I appreciate the solitude that helps me concentrate; however, time is limited. For this season, my focus has shifted, but my journey is far from over. You can follow my progress on Instagram at TatumBratcherArt. My Etsy shop, revampedart.etsy.com, features original pieces and print-on-demand products showcasing my artwork. Additionally, you can discover small collections of my creations at Marigold Vintage in Smiths Grove and at Candlemakers on the Square, here in Bowling Green. Thank you for your attention, friends. Stay curious!
